Where did The Bucket List Family stay in Nicaragua?

The bucket list family and their friends stayed in 3 beachfront villas in the gated community of Hacienda Iguana where our house is located. Hacienda Iguana is in the Tola region of Nicaragua on what is known as The Emerald Coast. The beach-front villas there are set right in front of two world-class surf breaks, Colorados and Panga Drops. Our house was rented at the time they booked and while we like to think our ocean-facing home would have been ideal for them as it sits right in front of Panga Drops, we can’t say for certain if they would have selected it.

What we do know is that it looks like the whole family had an amazing time during their two weeks here, enjoying all that the area has to offer: beautiful beaches, perfect waves, spectacular sunsets, horseback riding, yoga, and great food prepared in their villa or at the neighborhood restaurants. Garrett even mentioned he was considering coming back to host a Bucket List Surf Camp here in 2023 - so they must have thought it was a special place. We certainly hope they will return. We can’t think of a better location!

We saw a lot of The Bucket List Family followers were interested in learning more about Nicaragua and how it is to travel there nowadays. We were there most recently in April and will be returning in late December to spend a month there. For the past year, we’ve been flying to Liberia, Costa Rica and then arranging transport to take us over the border but American Airlines will be restarting their flights from Miami so we may decide to return to that route for traveling down. There are a lot of new homes, shops, and restaurants that have gone up in the community since we were last there before COVID, but it still remains uncrowded and feels a bit like a hidden paradise whether you are surfing the waves, walking down the beach, or biking around. And we definitely felt safe there. We hope the Gee’s family visit will encourage others to consider Nicaragua and Hacienda Iguana. And if you do please reach out to us - we’d be happy to answer any questions and help you organize every detail of your stay.

Best Tola Region Restaurants

We’ve been to most of the restaurants in the area and below are some notes from our trip there last December.  Some things may have changed since then, but as there isn't a lot of information on restaurants in this area we thought it would still be useful to post.

We are a bit biased since it is right down the road, but we do think Pili’s at the Iguana Beach Club offers the best food in the area. Everything there is fresh and organic, the service is great and they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Pili oversees everything and it shows.  For breakfast we are huge fans of the Acai bowl and smoothies, though many also love the egg burrito  For lunch all the salads are amazing – though our son prefers the nachos and they also offer fish tacos and other hot items.  The dinner menu changes nightly depending on what is freshest at the market. While there isn’t a lot of choice you will almost always find one fish, meat and pasta dish.  They are happy to adapt based on allergies or other food preferences and everything is excellent.  Appetizers like the carrot hummus bruschetta shouldn’t be missed but keep in mind that the servings are generous when ordering and a salad to start can easily be shared among 2-4 people.  They don’t take reservations, but if you are a large group it’s not a bad idea to give them a heads up about when you are coming in (and make sure you stick to that time).

Other places to grab lunch at Iguana are in the main commercial center.  Scoops and Spokes offers paninis, coffees, fresh juices and ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients - they have a small outdoor area to sit or you can take out.  Don Eloys offers traditional cuisine as well as burgers, nachos and more.

Another good spot for a group is Magnific Rock. Mag Rock has a spectacular cliff top setting overlooking the Popoyo beach and surf break.  They host happy hour with half price drinks from 3-6pm (though check the time as this will change with the seasons) at the downstairs bar which offers one of the best spots (outside of our front deck) to watch the sunset.  Dinner in the upstairs restaurant offers a menu of simple grilled meats and fishes as well as basics like burgers and quesadillas – all good and well priced. Appetizers are meant to be shared and range from nachos to excellent salads – the night we were there they featured a pumpkin, beetroot and watermelon salad.  Reserve early and get a table overlooking the ocean.  Definitely a fun, young scene with main courses ranging from $8-18.

Over in Gigante we are excited about the new Beach Bar Juntos  that opened one year ago at the end of the main street.  When we want in December they didn’t serve mixed drinks, only beers and shots.  The dinner menu features everything from stirfrys to local Nicaraguan fare that includes everything from nachos and tacos to a few other beef and seafood main course options - everything is very well priced.  They have launched a new menu since we've been there and are looking forward to checking it out when we are next there.  They don’t have a lot of tables so make sure you reserve if you are a big group.  Juntos also sometimes host local bands, so see if one is playing during the nights you are here.

There is also the Surf Sanctuary located down the road on the first left after the Rancho Santo service entrance.  Run by our friend Tony, the food is good but basic and you can get tacos and other dishes for around $10.  Hang out at their outdoor bar and play pool or ping pong.  For a more local meal on the same road you can stop by Yolandas for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For higher end meals you should try the restaurants at Rancho Santana, Aqua Wellness, and Mukul.  All are a bit pricier, require reservations and can be tough (or impossible)  to get in during holidays or other busy times of the year.  But for a special night out, it’s well worth it!  If you do go please remember to reconfirm that day as you will not get past the property gate if your name is not there - and so often these places have no record of your reservation that you know you made.  This happened to us at all 3 places.

Mukul offers 3 restaurants.  Recently renovated Tres Ceibas at the Mukul Beach Club is surprisingly affordable for this high end resort and offers a range of small plate dishes from sushi to carpaccio to local fish to burgers – we had an excellent meal here. Drinks can be pricey anywhere at this hotel, but at the beach club they also have specially priced cocktails on the menu.  The Beach Club restaurant is helmed by an Argentine chef who does a great job with locally available produce. It’s also a sports bar so three TV screens are located around the circular bar showing the latest games.   La Terraza Restaurant at the main resort is set on a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean and is now overseen by a new French chef.  Meal choices range from simple burgers to rib eye steaks and well executed local fish dishes.  Main courses range from $12-$40 and with appetizers and drinks a meal here can add up, but it is a lovely evening. Inside a more traditional room La Mesa is their highest end restaurant and offers a more formal environment with a menu to match.  Meals can be ordered a la carte or prix fixe.

Aqua Wellness offers one menu in two different locations – the downstairs outdoor bar area overlooking the ocean, and the Palapa covered upstairs dining area.  They have one of the most extensive menus we saw down here with several options in each category –  pizzas, meat, fish, vegetables (so if you have a vegetarian in your group this is a great option) and all are locally sourced and hormone free or organic – as well as a broad array of appetizers and desserts.   Not everything on the menu, however, is always available and the service was almost comically disorganized when we went – but that won’t stop us from going back as it’s a beautiful spot with good food and hopefully that has been remedied since then. Six Senses bought this property so expect some big changes in the next few years as they prepare to renovate and rebrand.

La Finca y El Mar, Rancho Santana’s seaside fine dining restaurant, is available for dinner reservations only from 5pm.  La Finca’s locally sourced menu features gourmet dishes from their organic farm and freshly caught seafood. Menu options include their signature local fish dish, lobster, steak, ribs – everything is great. This is probably our top choice for a nice night out taking into account value and quality and service.  Main courses range from $18-24.  Grab a table outside to enjoy the ocean breeze or sit inside the air-conditioned great room.  Go early to enjoy the sunset and try bocce ball or horseshoes on the lawn – or stay afterwards to enjoy an after dinner drink and a game of pool.  Rancho Santana also has a fine art gallery featuring Central and Latin American artists that is worth taking a few minutes to check out as you walk through their Inn to the restaurant.

New Costa Esmerelda Airport opens up transportation options

A new airport, Costa Esmerelda, just opened outside the gates of Hacienda Iguana. You can now take a 30 minute flight to or from Liberia on Sansa Airlines (running twice/day Mon, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun)  and to or from Managua on La Costena Airlines (running twice/day on Saturdays and Sundays).

While the airlines ask for the traditional 90 minute check in we found that arriving 30 minutes prior to departure left us plenty of time to check in and go through security.  We were the only customers in the Costa Esmerelda airport at that time so lines weren't an issue but they do need to weigh the bags, process paperwork and call in for the flight so make sure you give yourself at least 30 minutes.  The flight left perfectly on time and while you need to check your bags they are waiting for you on the tarmac when you arrive and we were able to go straight to the international terminal (3 minute walk from the domestic one) to check in for our ongoing flight.  Please keep in mind if you fly through Liberia you still will need to go through customs in Costa Rica before taking your flight to Nicaragua so plan accordingly.

If the connections work this can be a great option and significantly reduce your travel time.  These local flights on a 12 person Grand Caravan tend to cost around $100/person – or if you are a large group you can charter their 12 seater plane to fly at a time convenient to you for $1450 per leg.  Helicopter service is also available, though it is a much more expensive option.  It is also a great airport for private planes if that is your preferred way of travel  - which apparently generated much of the airport traffic over the winter holidays.

The Commercial Center at Hacienda Iguana

The Commercial Center at Hacienda Iguana continues to grow with new stores.  For a while now it has been home to NSR's Surfshop where you can rent boards and buy other surf equipment and Don Eloy's restaurant which serves food and drinks throughout the day.  The Commercial Center now hosts a broader array of shops and services all in one location not far from the gates.  Scoops and Spokes opened last year offering bike rentals and bike tours as well as home made ice cream, freshly made paninis, coffees and fruit juices.

The golf pro shop moved here in late December so now you start and end your day on Iguana's 9 hole golf course here - making it easier to pick up a bite to eat before heading out and stopping for a beer or cocktail once you are done.   Also in late December a local grocery sore opened where you can buy snacks, beer, wine and rum as well as restock some of the basics.  You can find fresh fruits as well and while you won't find fresh meat or fish you will find fresh fruit as well as many of the daily pantry items you need.  Carlos does a great job keeping the place stocked with most of what you need.  The most recent opening in early January is the new Satori Spa where massages, facials, body treatments, sunburn relief, waxing, manicures and pedicures are offered.  Try a yam and pumpkin enzyme peel or a strawberry rhubarb dermafoliant with lactic acid or any of their other wellness offerings designed around local ingredients.  We'll keep you posted on other store openings - but are thrilled will all these new spots so close to our house.

Welcome to Southern Dream

Welcome to Southern Dream!  Over the past 25 years we’ve traveled all over the world as a couple and then with our two children.  Through all this time we never found a vacation spot so compelling that we wanted to go back – until we found the Emerald Coast of Nicaragua.  We started coming to Nicaragua 3 years ago and fell in love with this area, the people and of course the beaches and the waves.  We are now thrilled to have our own home here to enjoy with friends and family and hope you will come for a visit and enjoy your time here as much as we do.  We can’t think of a more beautiful spot and a more welcoming community - we love being here right in front of the amazing waves of Panga Drops, watching the sunsets from our deck, playing golf at the uncrowded 9 hole golf course, taking yoga classes down the beach with Kimi, hanging out at Pili’s and the Beach Club as well as being centrally located so it easy for us to experience a diverse group of activities and restaurants that are within the area and an easy drive of our house.

Travel to Nicaragua is emerging as a prime tourism destination with more travelers discovering the beaches and cities there each year.  Yet general information on the Emerald coast and Rivas area where we are located is still a bit sparse on the Internet.   We will try to remedy that with this blog by keeping you posted on news, information and activities inside the gates of Hacienda Iguana as well as in the surrounding area.  Check back for updates and feel free to let us know what you would like to hear more about.

Thanks for stopping by.
